I’ve had some interest with friends wanting me to blog again and the reason I haven’t been is because of this beautiful summer that has begged me to stay outdoors with my daughter Sophie and our friends on our street. I couldn’t justify sitting on the computer for more than the time it took me to answer my emails when it was so beautiful outside. But now, a few days after a c-section, I’ve got no choice and thought some of you may want the latest update in my life, baby Leia Elizabeth! I truly wondered if I could love anyone as much as my first daughter, but all my fears were put to rest as soon as I heard that first cry and began sobbing on the operating table. Giving birth is the most amazing, scary, crazy moment I have ever experienced and now I have two beautiful baby girls to warm my heart everyday. I wasn’t due for two more weeks and I had a cesearean planned for the week before her due date but Leia had plans of her own and sent me into labor despite my attempts to avoid it on Wednesday, October 4, my father’s birthday as it turns out, and arrived at 1:53pm. She’s absolutley gorgeous and such a good baby weighing 7 pounds .4 ounces. She has long dark hair and her mommy and daddy wrapped around her long fingers. So there you go blog readers…there’s an update. Kate=Happy.

My grandpa passed away last night. I’ve spent the morning going through my memories of him, trying to sharpen their hue. Unfortunately it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen him, not since my high school graduation. And it wouldn’t have mattered much if I had because he wouldn’t have known me anyway…he had alzheimers. This is what I remember. A handsome man with a beautiful smile, just like my mom’s. A beautiful house with a vegetable and fruit tree garden in the back. A mysterious room; pushing through heavy glass beads to get into that room and finding all sorts of asian art…lots of Buddha. I never knew what he was or if my grandfather was Buddhist or not but I loved to rub the shiny bellies and look at the jovial faces. That room led to an asian garden with a pond full of big orange and yellow fish. I could have watched them all day long. For Christmas my grandpa always sent my sister jewelry and me hardback cover illustrated classics. I’m not sure if my mom tipped him off to this but he was so right about us. My name would always be spelled with a C…Catherine…no matter how many times my mother would correct him. It never bothered me. When he would come to visit he would always put me to work. I would get a taste of what it was like to be my mother growing up. The last time I saw him he told us a story about how on Valentine’s Day in elementary school he bought a heart shaped box of chocolates for a girl he liked, incidentally not his girlfriend. When his girlfriend found out she forgave him. His exact words with a devilish grin were, “I should have married that girl.” We all laughed. And one last memory. My mother went to see him in the first years of his sickness and he told a story of how his granddaughter sang at her graduation and how wonderful she sounded.

I love you too, Grandpa.

Apparantly some of our genius Senators have come up with the idea to give everyone $100 dollars to go toward helping with the high cost of gas. In exchange for this money we have to be willing to let the government drill in our Arctic refuge. It absolutely angers me to no end that we are missing the whole freaking point of our problem. We are dependant on fuel that not only will eventually run out but on it’s way to it’s death is taking us with it. So what’s our solution? I don’t even know why I’m suprised…the quick fix of course…give everyone $100 dollars…a couple tanks of gas. That will make everyone happy…then maybe they’ll vote for us in the future. Whoever votes for this is off my Christmas list. And my November ballot.

I took an opportunity while Sophie was napping to go out into my gardens and clean them up for the coming blooms. I’ve been waiting for this moment ever since I planted the gardens this past summer. I’ve been anxious to see how my hard work last summer has grown and spread and I was not dissapointed. Pulling away the dead leaves and rampant weeds I found one bud after another, parents and babies starting to reach for the sky. I wondered last year as I was planting if the desire to keep up with my gardens would remain or if I would lose interest after such a long winter break. Well, my desire has only grown and I can’t wait until after Mother’s Day when I will start on yet another garden to nurture and love and find next spring waking up from its long winter nap.
