About a week or so ago I sent out an email to all my friends asking them to send an email to Canada’s Prime Minister to stop the clubbing of baby seals, an annual hunting event for fur. One of the friends I sent this to was my husband who usually ignores my various bleeding heart emails, so you can imagine my surprise when I received an email back saying, “Let’s stop those seal clubbing bastards!” Later that day I thanked him for joining me in the fight and told him how surprised I was. And he put it like this, “I just had to ask myself: For clubbing of baby seals? Against clubbing of baby seals? I’m going to have to go with with against.” After we were finished laughing we further decided that there are two kinds of people in this world. And I’m sure you can see where I’m going with this. What kind are you?

And I’m one of them.  Yesterday I drove down to my folks house with my husband and daughter and unborn child.  As I’m getting back into the car after stopping at the gas station, “Where are my sunglasses?  I just had them!?  Um, yeah, on my freakin head.”  Fastforward a couple hours later, leaving my folks house, “Mom!  I left my keys inside, can you get them?”

“They’re not here dear.”

“No kidding?  Cause they’re in my freakin hand!!!!”  No Joke.

Rewind a half hour and my husband and I are leaving the movie, The Inside Man and he has to explain the ending to me.  Not only that, but it wasn’t until I was lying in bed last night, trying to sleep that I finally figured out what the hell was going on with the characters in that movie, I totally had it wrong.  Great movie by the way, once I freakin figured it out.

Well, it’s nice to know someone cares that I haven’t been blogging. You’re right, I just haven’t felt well enough to blog about anything. I’ve been debating about blogging about my pregnancy…that’s right, for those who don’t know I’m pregnant…mainly because I wanted to make sure I got around to all my friends to tell them. But I can’t help it if they don’t call me back and I think I’ve reached most so I’m going ahead and blogging. With my last pregnancy I was majorly sick, on meds the whole time to quell my vomitting and I’ve been put on them again. I hate feeling like this, it really puts a damper on everything and makes it impossible to be excited about the baby. But I do know that once the bad stage is over that will quickly go away and I will get excited again. So here’s to a speedy 1st trimester!

Last night I became one of those people. Last night I began spying on my neighbor. It snuck up on me, I wasn’t expecting it, but somewhere along the line I became suburban, dammit. I had just finished putting Sophie to bed when I went to close the curtains in my front window. I had just been thinking about how I hated being home without my husband, he was out of town last night, and letting my imagination run wild with what I might spy outside my window, a burglar, a rapist. Imagine my surprise when I found two police cars in front of my neighbor’s house. I immediately called my neighbor, not the neighbor, but another one to see if she was aware of the police presence on our quiet little street. She wasn’t aware and called to her husband to go take the trash out and see if he could find out what was going on. But I could tell them much better since I was the house directly across the street and as of right then nothing was going on. I got off the phone with my neighbor so she could call another neighbor to see if they knew anything. The next twenty minutes was spent spying out the window in my door and talking to my nieghbors on the phone. I saw a couple of civilian cars pull up and enter the house so I knew something was going on in the house and then eventually a fire truck and ambulance arrived, no sirens, just lights. They took a gurney in and brought someone out, to me it looked like a woman with dark hair, although my neighbor thought it looked like an old man. I racked my brain about why police would have been there for so long before an ambulance if someone was hurt, was it domestic abuse? Had someone broken in to her home and hurt her? I guess I’ll never know. She’s new to our cul de sac and none of us really know her. So, why am I writing about this. Because this is my confession. My name is Kate and I have been sucked in by the suburban lifestyle of gossip and speculation. The first step is admitting it.

I just watched this unbelievable movie today. I am so thankful when I stumble on a movie that stands out, and makes me think, and is just well acted, not overly done, just honest and brilliant. It’s called "Stage Beauty" with Billy Crudup and Claire Daines and it absolutely blew me away. For my friend Danny, it was Trocious!! The opposite of atrocious. It’s about the time in England when women are granted the right to act on stage and how that affects, specifically, Billy Crudup’s character who is an actor that plays female roles. There is this scene where he is coaching Claire Danes on the death scene in Othello and I was absolutely riveted and then they showed the actual performance and it moved me to tears. I can’t remember the last time I watched a Shakespeare play and was moved to tears. It’s a difficult thing to do, having seen and read the plays so many times, but they did it, they made me cry, and they surprised me, and horrified me and made me feel as if I was seeing something I had never seen before. I could tell in the moments before this particular scene that this was what the writer of the script was aiming for but to actually pull it off. Claire Danes and Billy Crudup deserve awards for what they did and whoever directed this movie, I just want to kiss you for grabbing my interest and transforming me while I watched. It was beauitful. Today was an extra special day for me and my daughter. And probably not for the reasons you’d think, it wasn’t her birthday or mine, she didn’t say any new words or do something she has never done before. We just had fun. In the morning we drove over to the Arboretum and I followed her as she explored and discovered. It was fascinating to see what really excited her, like the gravel rocks. She was perfectly content to sit and rearrange the rocks for a good 15 minutes. She also loved looking at the water in the ponds and pointing out every tree we passed. After we spent a good hour exploring the depths of the park we returned home for lunch and a nap. She slept a whole 2 1/2 hours which is long for her. I guess all the walking around tired her out. After she woke up we immediately went outside again because it was such a beautiful warmish crispy air kind of day. We drew pictures on our driveway in chalk and a message for Daddy saying Sophia Loves Daddy for when he comes home. And now we’re awaiting his arrival, Sophie in just a diaper and sweatshirt, she loves to be naked, even if it’s only her legs.

My favorite candy is peanut m&m’s. Nothing else will ever compare. And thankfully, my husband didn’t mess around and try something new, or expensive, or different. He gave me the old tried and true peanut m&m’s and I couldn’t be happier!!!! I wonder what my life would be like without them? Probably 5 pounds lighter.

I don’t know when it happened but somewhere along the line Sophie developed a sense of humor.  Not only does she find the most curious things funny (not just anything will make her laugh) but she also became funny herself.   This morning I left her downstairs for a minute and when I came back down she was pointing at something and saying, "Oh no."  I made my way around the couch to investigate and found a box of tissues entirely torn apart; tissues everywhere.  And I started to laugh.  She knew perfectly well that what she did was wrong and she was trying to make it seem like it was an accident or like the kleenex has torn themselves up.  She is friggin briliant.
